Andel

The partnership with Andel is about using more renewable energy and inspiring participants at the festival to engage in the green transition.

Renewable Festival Energy with Andel

We have a significant responsibility to help solve the climate crisis and ensure good living conditions for future generations.

We can do this on many fronts. One of these fronts is about energy – about our consumption of heating and electricity and about phasing out fossil fuels like diesel and gas in favour of renewable energy.

In this way, our energy consumption causes less air pollution and a lower carbon footprint.

In 2022 we entered a five-year partnership with Danish energy company Andel.

In the partnership’s first year, we took some huge steps towards a greener future together by connecting the entire festival area to the Danish electricity grid.

This enabled us to stop all use of diesel generators for electricity and we began phasing out bottled gas in the food stalls.

In 2024 Roskilde Festival uses much more energy from renewable sources than ever before. But we haven't reached our goal with the green transition yet.

Andel remains a crucial partner in the transition to a more climate-friendly festival.

Meet Andel

Andel is Denmark’s leading energy and fibre-optic group. Andel is also a cooperative society and a group with subsidiaries. The purpose of Andel is to create value for customers and cooperative owners. Andel creates welfare and growth regionally and in society in general by providing vital infrastructure and future-proof energy solutions.

Here are our initiatives in 2024:

Mapping the Power Usage

We are initiating a detailed mapping of the festival's power consumption. We know the total amount of electricity we use at the festival, but we lack a precise overview of our electricity usage so that we can learn where and how we can further reduce our energy consumption.

Therefore, we are installing 30 monitoring devices in a selection of food stalls and bars to give us accurate data about the consumption. This mapping will help us distribute the right amount of electricity to the right places in the enormous festival city and is another targeted step towards the complete phase-out of gas by 2025.

Since 2022, we have phased out 68 percent of our gas usage, equivalent to 11.56 tons of CO2. The gas is primarily used for cooking in the stalls.

Festival participants can follow the energy consumption via a digital screen set up on the festival grounds. The screen shows the power consumption for a specific food stall that has switched from gas to electricity and illustrates the amount of CO2 saved by purchasing food from this stall.

Energy Battle in the Camping Area

Andel is developing an Energy Battle in the festival's camping area. This interactive experience offers playful participants the opportunity to explore a universe about sustainable behaviour and green transition in an engaging and technologically creative way. Join in Area H.

Electric Upgrades to Festival Vehicles

In collaboration with Andel's subsidiary Clever and Andel Holding, we have focused on replacing the petrol cars used in festival production with electric vehicles. Clever and Andel Holding ensure that a sufficient number of charging stations are available on the festival grounds.

From 2024, we intensify our efforts by adding more alternatives to petrol-powered vehicles, including electric cargo bikes supplied by Omnium. These bikes enable our volunteer teams to transport smaller quantities of materials around the site in a more climate-friendly way by cycling instead of driving.

Purchase of Energy Certificates

Again in 2024, the Roskilde Festival Group is buying energy certificates from Andel Holding's solar park in Tryggevælde. These certificates do not represent the actual electricity running through the cables in the grid under the festival site. Instead, our purchase of certificates ensures that an amount of renewable energy is produced equivalent to our total electricity consumption.
