Florida-born rapper and producer Willie Wilson has built an unusually devoted following with music that sounds like little else in hip-hop right now: rapid pitch-shifted vocals, elastic beats and melodies that can move from cloud rap and R&B to jungle, ambient and off-kilter electronic impulses.
454 started uploading music to SoundCloud in 2018, with his breakthrough coming through “Late Night” and later the mixtape Fast Trax. Since then, he has become a genuine cult figure without ever really playing by the usual rules. Frank Ocean was an early fan, Denzel Curry and Zack Fox have championed him, and collaborations with artists including Playboi Carti and Freddie Gibbs have pushed his sound even further towards hip-hop’s outer edges.
But what makes 454 special is not just the voice or the production.
