Moroccan Gnawa has deep historical roots and reveals a ritualistic, trance-inducing magic that continues to fascinate modern listeners. Younger Moroccan musicians are also delving into the style and developing it, and this year’s Roskilde Festival offers a shining example of this when Saad Tiouly takes to the stage with his band.
Saad Tiouly’s music creates a deep connection to the traditions of Gnawa through the chanting vocals, the frenetic rhythms of the castanet-like qraqebs and, not least, the hypnotic sound of the guembri. This traditional stringed instrument is inextricably linked to the sound of Gnawa, and in Saad Tiouly’s hands it resonates with a vital energy. He has even built his own instrument from scratch – a testament to his close connection to Gnawa as both a mythical ritual and a craft.
He grew up in Casablanca’s old medina, where he absorbed the local traditions. Yet he is also a modern musician who is not afraid to incorporate elements of electronic music to expand the trance-inducing soundscapes of Gnawa, just as his personal lyrics blend the poetic layers of Gnawa with contemporary themes that resonate with a younger audience.
When he performs with his band, it is hard not to be swept away by the music, which blends the spiritual essence of Gnawa with an almost psychedelic energy and sound; and Saad Tiouly truly succeeds in revealing the magic of Gnawa to new listeners through his fervent enthusiasm, infectious vocals and energetic dancing on stage. You’re invited to dance along when Saad Tiouly brings his personal take on Gnawa to Roskilde Festival.
