Hyped producer and singer-songwriter Underscores is at the forefront of what has been dubbed feral pop – pop music pushed towards its wildest, most chaotic and boundaryless extremes. Here, 2000s pop, with references to artists such as Britney Spears and Timbaland, clashes with solid EDM bangers, dubstep, future bass and emo-pop, creating a sound that is both dazzling and constantly unpredictable.
On her latest album, U, April Harper Grey, aka Underscores, twists pop music history in new and surprising directions through inventive production and a playful approach to genres and references. NME described the album as “a tour de force of production chops that cements April Harper Grey as a key auteur in the future of the genre”.
Even as a teenager, April Harper Grey showed a flair for innovative production through a series of tracks uploaded to SoundCloud and a handful of EPs, before establishing herself as a striking new voice in alternative pop with her debut album Fishmonger (2021). The Line of Best Fit even hailed it as one of the best hyperpop albums of all time. The album also led to 100 Gecs inviting Underscores on tour – a major endorsement for an artist who has cited the duo as one of her biggest inspirations.
Collaborations with artists such as Yaeji and Oklou have helped cement Underscores’ position as one of the sharpest architects of pop music’s future, and fittingly, she was recently invited to support Charli XCX on her Music, Fashion, Film Tour. More recently, she has also collaborated with Frost Children, who performed at Roskilde Festival in 2026. Like them, Underscores delivers shows where an innovative mix of genres is matched by a frenetic, almost punk-like energy.
