Hard beats and lustful songs from the dark side of electro pop

  • Thursday 2 July

Swedish artist Cobrah plays electronic pop music that gets straight into your body. But even though she delivers bangers according to all the rules of pop music, there is no doubt that she has been influenced by the darker sides of culture.

With a musical upbringing in Gothenburg's death metal scene and a love for Stockholm's fetish clubs and BDSM scene, she incorporates elements of raw underground culture into the sparkling universe of pop — with a dark edge, but also a good dose of humor, as suggested by her homemade genre labels such as BDSM pop and Gay Workout Music.

There is no doubt about her embrace of queerness, and the term BDSM pop perfectly describes an expression where hard-hitting beats and dark tones awaken euphoria and carnal desires.

Since her debut EP Icon in 2019, interest in Cobrah has grown steadily. The single “Brand New Bitch” was used in Emma Stone’s iconic dance scene in the film Kinds of Kindness, and none other than Charli XCX has declared herself a fan and invited Cobrah on stage for a show in Stockholm.

With the brand-new album Torn, Cobrah expands her universe even further. Here she balances club euphoria with vulnerability in songs exploring desire, intimacy and the fear of losing control in relationships. Musically she continues to move through a hard-hitting electronic landscape inspired by ballroom, deconstructed club and electropop, while opening up a more atmospheric and melodic side of her sound.

Cobrah delivered a sweaty party at Roskilde Festival in 2022. This summer she returns with Torn in her back pocket and an even stronger arsenal of club-ready bangers — ready to raise the pulse and turn the show into a dark, sweaty pop party.
